The original Seumas Buidhe (translated as James Sutherland, the Yellow-haired James) was from Ceann-na-Coille on the Helmsdale River in the East of the county of Sutherland. He lived there in the early 19th century until the time of the Highland Clearances. In 1813 Seumas family were sent to the New World and he followed in 1815.
Seumas became something of a spiritual leader for the emigrants as they settled in Kildonan on the Red River named after the Strath from which he had been cleared.
Not all the Sutherlands went to America though and the remainder settled along the east coast from Helmsdale up to Latheron and Forse in Caithness. These were my ancestors and I am indeed a yellow haired James Sutherland living in Caithness with a legacy back to Seumas and obviously further back to the Vikings who also settled here.
In 1999 I took over the long established music shops in Wick and Thurso belonging to the Shearer family and still run them to this day. As general music stores with obviously a degree of local product that draws on the areas rich musical heritage I decided to take the business online to a offer wide selection of music with an emphasis on the sounds of the North of Scotland.
Being an all round store however means that we offer anything from Scottish, Celtic and Folk to Country & Western, Rock and Pop music. Also stocked is a large range of musical instruments. The shops are located in Wick and Thurso and are open from 9.00am to 5.30pm, Mon - Sat and we are glad to see any visitors to our shop. We also welcome any e-mail or telephone enquiries. |
